How To Pitch

 How To Pitch

Pitching is essential to the process of producing music videos, it's arguably one of the most crucial things.

Music video director Jakob Owens advice for music video treatments:

  1. Make them very visual with a lot of visual reference images.
  2. Be descriptive and to the point without writing a novel.
  3. Make it visually appealing and interesting with an artsy, unique, eye-catching design.

It's a roadmap for what will be delivered to the artist. One of the common mistakes when writing treatments is making them too dense and not visually driven -- A music video is using images to sell the story and you video treatment should reflect that.

Things to consider before putting together the treatment:

• Do your research on the artist -- the song may inspire an elaborate interpretation, but if the artist's band is simple and authentic, it may not be entirely suitable. Look at past videos and see where their taste and comfort level has lived in the past.

The video products that are put out should be a reflection of your artistic vision and fulfil the promise of the song and the brand of the artist. A clean, clear and professional representation of your idea is key.

Structure of the pitch:

1. Introduce your treatment

- Artists Name & Track Title
- Director's Name
- Production company (if applicable)
- Add a background image, that represents the overall finished music video

- Add a summary of the idea at the top.

2. Explain your idea

- Storyboard (the whole music video, or a specific key element to the music video), and have small descriptions under each shot.
- Write out the music video with descriptive sentences for each moment of the video.
- Reference other work whilst explaining as well - examples are key.

3. Explain your method and technique

- If an element of the video requires technical aspects, explain these moments, and how you'll achieve them.

4. Reference your idea

Find anything you like:

- A certain camera angle

- The colour grade you are looking for

- Make up images

- Costume designs you want to include

- The look and feel of the character in the video (if there is one)
